Instructions

1

Steep the Hibiscus Tea

Add the dried hibiscus flowers to a heatproof pitcher. Pour the boiling water over the flowers and allow them to steep for 10 minutes. The liquid will turn a deep jewel red color.

2

Make the Simple Syrup

While the tea steeps combine the sugar with 0.25 cup of hot water in a small saucepan over medium heat. Stir until the sugar is completely dissolved then remove from heat and cool.

3

Strain and Cool

Strain the hibiscus tea through a fine mesh sieve discarding the spent flowers. Allow the tea to cool to room temperature for about 20 minutes or refrigerate for faster cooling.

4

Combine and Flavor

Add the simple syrup fresh lemon juice rose water and cold water to the cooled hibiscus tea. Stir well to combine. Taste and adjust sweetness or lemon as preferred. Do not add too much rose water as it can become soapy.

5

Serve Over Ice

Fill tall glasses with ice cubes and pour the hibiscus lemonade over the ice. Garnish each glass with a lemon slice and an optional fresh or dried edible rose petal. Serve immediately.

Substitutions

dried hibiscus flowers4 hibiscus herbal tea bags for a quicker preparation
granulated sugarhoney dissolved in warm water for a more complex sweetness
rose watera small sprig of fresh mint for a different but equally refreshing floral note

Common mistakes

Steeping the hibiscus for too long which makes the tea excessively tart and overpowers all other flavors
Adding too much rose water which quickly turns the drink into an overwhelmingly perfumed and soapy tasting beverage
Using bottled lemon juice instead of fresh which results in a flat and artificial tasting drink
